Dr. Lindquist has noted that the greenhouse whitefly may not be as susceptible as the silverleaf whitefly to 'Marathon'. He has not had any reports of poinsettia mites in Ohio as of yet but did note that mites are being observed in other states. He reminds us that 'Marathon' does not control mites. Some green peach aphid infestations were noted in several greenhouses. If whiteflies are seen, it may be that the person applying Marathon missed several pots. Growers should remember to put sticky cards to monitor the results of sprays. Good mum sales this season in Indiana and Ohio. Flowering cabbages seem to be slow sellers.
The third Floriculture Crops Diagnostics Workshop will be held at Ulrey Greenhouses in Springfield OH on November 14, 1996 beginning at 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm. Piketon Research Center will conduct a Bedding Plant Workshop on Dec. 6 for the small grower that has 1-3 houses. Franklin Park Conservatory (Columbus, OH) will have a poinsettia show beginning November 30 until January 6. Standard admission is $5. Behnke reminds everybody of the SERC regulations that growers need report dangerous substances to their local fire department, local disaster management office and the state disaster management office. This reporting of hazardous substances has been in effect since 1988.
Interested growers should note that various state pesticide recertification schools that cover greenhouse, interiorscape will be held Nov. 26 in Cleveland, Dec.17 in Dayton, Jan. 16 Perrysburg, and Jan. 28 Columbus. All commercial people will be notified with details.
